Siena, Italy Europe VacationsSiena is one of Italy's best preserved medieval towns, located in the heart of Tuscany. Built on three hills and surrounded by well preserved walls, it features one of the world's most unique piazzas, Piazza del Campo. Once the site of a Roman forum, it is now the city's central market place. It became the center for civic life with the construction of the Town Hall in the 12th century (now the Civic Museum).
Siena is also widely appreciated by art lovers for its many museums. Amazingly diverse with its small, serene piazzas and stately 14th and 15th century buildings, visitors experience a sense of stepping back in time into a medieval world.
We recommend that travelers visit the city for at least two days and rent a car. Siena makes an excellent base for excursions to Tuscany, Florence and Assisi. It is not far from charming towns such as San Gimignano, Pienza, and cities world famous for wine, such as Montalcino and Montepulciano.
