Kind of like the Hamptons but with less of a nightlife scene, this playground for the rich and famous is a society based on benefit bashes, second houses (mansions), very fine dining and Beverly Hills-style shopping. If chiming right in is a bit out of your league, you're certainly not alone. But you shouldn't be scared off, either. A stroll along the truly Gold Coast beach is stunning, a slow drive past the massive gated compounds (or a walk through the Breakers hotel) is anthropological-based gawking at its best.
When Henry Flagler first decided to develop the area that is now West Palm Beach, he knew exactly what it would become: a real city that could support his glittering resort town across the causeway. And so the fraternal twins were born, Palm Beach always considered the fairer of the two, West Palm working hard, playing harder, and being - simply - cooler.
