Portland Vacations

Topping the USA's 'most liveable cities' list, Oregon's largest city attracts cutting-edge young artists and musicians as well as more go-getting types. It's the type of place where investment bankers wear Birkenstocks, coffee shops double as boardrooms and everybody is outdoors on the weekend.

Overview

With more inner-city parks than most cities have parking, and more brewpubs than burger joints, it's no wonder Portland is among the fastest growing cities in the US. The city sits at the junction of two great rivers, ringed by vast forests and ancient volcanoes.

Events

The city's doyen of festivals and its oldest civic event is the Portland Rose Festival, held in early June. The beautiful floral display at the International Rose Test Gardens is the nominal excuse for nearly two weeks of festivities, but the real focus of events are the parades, the riverfront carnival, the immense naval ships docked right downtown and the crowning of the Rose Queen. Portland's most important and ambitious musical festival is the Chamber Music Northwest series, a season of chamber music concerts held at both Reed College campus and at Catlin Gabel School. In early July, the Waterfront Blues Festival brings life to downtown's riverside park. In early August, the Mt Hood Jazz Festival attracts nationally recognised artists to Mt Hood Community College in Gresham. The latest alternative rock bands hit Portland in mid-September for Musicfest Northwest, inspired by the famous South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. Over 200 bands from across the US and Canada converge for a wicked weekend of non-stop gigging.
