Overview

Belize’s largest island, Ambergris Caye, is 25 stunning miles long and more than a mile wide in places. It is located in the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea near the southern end of Mexico's sun-kissed Yucatan Peninsula.

San Pedro Town sits near the tip of Ambergris Caye. Its quaint streets are lined with colorful wooden houses, lively beach bars and seafood restaurants offering some of the freshest fish in the region, plus an impressive range of accommodations.

Around 10,000 or so lucky natives call this isle home. Although Spanish is the primary language spoken here, most of the locals speak some English. Visitors and residents roam the town’s sandy streets via golf carts and bicycles.

Most of Ambergris Caye is covered with tropical flora and forests. And its surrounding seas are packed with multi-colored creatures, making Ambergris Caye a prime spot for divers, snorkelers and vacationers looking to wander a bit off the beaten path toward paradise.

What To Do

Dive in the clear waters of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and search for parrotfish and moray eels. Swim with nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley.

Tour the waters surrounding the isle via speedboat. Visit the impressive Mayan Chac Balam archaeological site deep in the Yucatan jungle in Bacalar Chico National Park and Marin Reserve at the north end of Ambergris Caye.

Explore Belize’s most incredible dive site, the Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef, discovered by Jacques Cousteau, near Ambergris Caye.

When to Go

Warm year-round, temperatures in San Pedro and Ambergris Caye generally run between 75 F and 85 F. The rainy season extends from June to November. There are plenty of sunny days on Belize’s largest island, Amergris Caye, especially between December and May.
