Over 45 years have passed since Pleasant Holidays opened its first small retail travel agency in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. We've certainly come a long way, and we couldn't have done it without each of our valued partners in the travel industry. In all that time, the changes in our business and the travel industry have been astounding, but one constant has remained. Our history has shown that continued growth comes by consistently offering the best possible travel values. Here are some of the highlights of the last 45-plus years:
Our company opens as Pleasant Travel Service in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and Hawaii becomes the 50th State.
Pleasant Holidays moves to Panorama City, California. to focus on Hawaii.
Pleasant Holidays relocates to Westlake Village, California, home of its corporate headquarters today.
Pleasant Holidays begins the largest and most successful charter operation to Hawaii from the West Coast with Western Airlines.
Pleasant Holidays signs its first long-term agreement with United Airlines.
Pleasant Holidays takes over ground operations in Hawaii.
Delta Airlines' entire domestic system (following its merger with Western) is added. Pleasant Holidays starts trans-Pacific service with Hawaiian Airlines. We enter into a long-term agreement with Dollar Rent A Car. We send our 2-millionth customer to Hawaii.
Pleasant Holidays' expanded list of Mainland departure cities grows to over 200 with the addition of United Express and Delta Connection flights.
ASTA Agency Management magazine names Pleasant Holidays' 800 number reservations system second-best in the entire travel industry.
Pleasant Holidays brings its 3-millionth customer to Hawaii, representing over $2.4 billion in revenue to the state, establishes a military fund for troops serving in the Persian Gulf and their families in need, and introduces our Quality Assurance Department.
Pleasant Holidays receives the United States Senate "Productivity Award" for innovation and operations efficiency.
Pleasant Holidays introduces Mexico travel vacations.
Pleasant Holidays launches its fleet of scheduled American Trans Air flights from the West Coast, adding more than 500,000 seats.
Our 4-millionth customer visits Hawaii. Pleasant Holidays is recognized by the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau and Hawaii's governor, for our ongoing support of Hawaii tourism.
Pleasant Holidays purchases the 40-year-old Japan & Orient Tours to expand into the Pacific, Asia and Europe. Tahiti travel packages are introduced. Pacific Destination Services is launched to handle group and incentive business in Hawaii. Pleasant Concierge Service is established for clients requesting suites and special amenities.
Pleasant Holidays celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Automobile Club of Southern California purchases a majority ownership of Pleasant Holidays, LLC. AAA nationally is one of the largest travel companies, with over 1,100 branch offices and 5,500 travel agents. Pleasant Holidays continues business relationships with our other national accounts, including Virtuoso, Carlson-Wagonlit, Leisure Travel Group, American Express, Travelsavers, Signature and over 20,000 independent travel agencies.
Pleasant Holidays opens a second, 30,000-square-foot call center in Bakersfield, California housing up to 300 reservations agents.
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, Pleasant Holidays creates a "Keep 'em Flying" campaign to encourage our valued customers to continue traveling, and Pleasant Holidays has developed a program to raise up to $500,000 with Hawaii hotel and car rental partners to benefit New York firefighter and rescue worker widows and orphans.
Pleasant Holidays appoints Tim Irwin President and CEO of Pleasant Holidays. Pleasant Holidays earns special recognition in the category of Hospitality & Travel at the first annual Business Hall of Fame Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, California. In a travel agent study conducted by Northstar Research on behalf of TravelAge West magazine, Pleasant Holidays gains the highest overall satisfaction rating among its top eight competitors, based on travel agent services, products and tour packages; and for the likelihood of being recommended as a tour operator conducting trips to Hawaii, the South Pacific, Asia, the Caribbean and Mexico.
Pleasant Holidays President and CEO Tim Irwin is named Tour Wholesaler of the Year by Travel Agent magazine. Pleasant Holidays purchases Hawaii World, a company specializing in high-end Hawaii travel packages.
Pleasant Holidays is named Top Hawaii Wholesaler by travel agent readers of Travel Weekly magazine.
Pleasant Holidays receives the "Mazatlan Golden Deer" trophy and designation as the 2005 Top USA Wholesaler by the Mexico government of the State of Sinaloa. Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle proclaims December 9, 2005 as "Pleasant Holidays Day" in honor of the company's support of Hawaii tourism since 1959. Pleasant Holidays takes the reader's choice award for its Asia/SouthPacific product, as voted by travel agent readers of Recommend magazine. Pleasant Holidays celebrates its second consecutive win as Top Hawaii Wholesaler by travel agent readers of Travel Weekly magazine. Our company also enjoyed finalist positions for Mexico and Asia/SouthPacific.
Pleasant Holidays partners with TheBigDay, the world's leading online honeymoon registry, to allow prospective newlyweds and their guests the opportunity to pre-plan (and pay for) the dream vacation of their lives. Pleasant Holidays forms an alliance with Air Brokerage International (ABI) to allow travel groups to charter all or part of an aircraft to destinations virtually anywhere in the world.
Pleasant Holidays claims triple-victory at the second annual TravelAge West WAVE Awards, taking home acclamations as the Best Tour Operator For Hawaii; Best Tour Operator For Asia; and Best Tour Operator Website Design For Travel Agents. Kudos were also accepted from Travelzoo.com, which named Pleasant Holidays the Best Overall Provider of Vacation Package Deals. After Pleasant Holidays' President & CEO Tim Irwin announced his retirement, an extensive search with the company's announcement of travel industry veteran Jack Richards as its new President & CEO.
