Overview

Formerly known as Charles Town, Nassau was founded in 1670 by a British Nobleman in honor of England’s King Charles I. Several forts were constructed in the 18th century to protect Nassau from approaching pirates and other invaders. Fort Fincastle, Fort Montagu and Fort Charlotte still stand. The 102 steps of the Queen’s Staircase, carved by hand from limestone, took sixteen years to build. The stairs provide a shortcut between Fort Fincastle and Bennet’s Hill for the historically, and athletically, inclined.

But Nassau’s attractions stretch far beyond its colorful history; sand and sea rank high on the list of things to do here.  With its pristine sands and warm, calm waters, and upscale resorts Cable Beach offers endless opportunities for fun and relaxation.  Right down the road from Cable Beach, and new to Nassau’s shores, is the magnificent Baha Mar Resort.

Nassau connects to nearby Paradise Island via two bridges stretching across the harbor, is best known for its expansive coral-colored Atlantis Resort featuring AquaVenture, a water park featuring thrilling adventures for the entire family, lively casinos, and a marine habitat.

What To Do

Explore the underwater sculpture garden and above-ground historical sites, known as the Pirate Steps, at Clifton Heritage Park.

Nuzzle with friendly bottlenose dolphins in a private lagoon, perfect for kids of all ages or explore the downtown area around Rawson Square.

Travel across the harbor to Paradise Island,  Atlantis and its more than 200 species of marine life in one of the world’s biggest open-air aquariums on Paradise Island and ride a submarine beneath the sea. View the Pirates of Nassau Museum, an interactive museum with a 75-foot, three-mast pirate ship. Go on a SNUBA underwater adventure that combines the joy of scuba diving with the ease of snorkeling. Top off your day with a grand sunset champagne cruise.
