Florence was divided into four quarters during the Renaissance: San Spirito, San Croce, San Maria Novella, and San Giovanni. Each quarter was named after the area’s most important church.
Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the lower valley of Florence’s Arno River.
The beloved children’s classic, Pinocchio, was written by Florence’s own Carlo Lorenzini during the late 1800’s. The author used the penname Collodi in honor of the Florence village where his mother was born.
