Overview

Croatia’s third-largest city was named European Capital of Culture for 2020. Rijeka is also renowned for its Carnival, regarded as one of the top events in Europe and Croatia’s largest party. The heart of the city is the Korzo, Rijeka’s main promenade where locals and visitors alike sip cappuccino in cafés, savor Croatian cuisine in a cornucopia of restaurants, and admire its most famous structures, including the emblematic City Tower.

What to Do

Stroll along the Korzo alongside locals. The Korzo, which runs parallel to the harborfront, is Rijeka’s revered promenade and the heartbeat of the city. It is lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Experience world and Croatian culture at the Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre. This multi-use, neoclassical venue is an architectural masterpiece where visitors can see an opera, dramatic performance, ballet, or symphony orchestra. Visit Trsat Castle for panoramic views and historical insight. Here you will also find one of Croatia’s most important pilgrimage sites, the Church of Our Lady of Trsat, which can be reached by the renowned Petar Druzic Stairway. Other must-see sights in Rijeka include the PEEK&POKE Computer Museum, home to more than 2,000 vintage computers, calculators, game consoles, and more; and the Blue Flag beach of Ploce, once voted the best beach in Croatia in the category of urban/local beach.

When to Go

The best time to visit Rijeka, if going for the beaches, is June through August. However, in order to avoid the summer crowds, visit during shoulder season, May to mid-June and September through October. If traveling to Rijeka for the annual Carnival, plan on visiting between the second half of January and the first half of February.
