Overview

Off the rocky coast of Maine lies sprawling Mount Desert Island, home to Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park. Long one of Maine’s most popular coastal destinations, this friendly seaside town avoids the label of tourist trap with a stunning natural backdrop and a cheerful embrace of the kitschy and nostalgic.

What To Do

Hunt souvenirs by the sea – Wander through the gift shops and galleries of downtown Bar Harbor, where you’ll browse local crafters and artists to find your perfect memory for the trip home.

Cruise the Park Loop Road – This 27-mile road winds through Acadia National Park, offering access to breathtaking vistas and natural attractions along the way. Take a few hours to complete the loop, or pack a lunch and set aside a day to explore as you go!

Eat your fill at a lobster pound – Seafood doesn’t get much fresher than this. Lobster and other seafood is boiled and picked on site, and each establishment insists they serve the best roll on the island.

When to Go

Bar Harbor is a largely seasonal destination, with most businesses open late spring through early fall. June and September are popular months for visitors who prefer the quiet, when the weather is pleasant but the crowds not yet at their peak. For lovers of fall foliage, a drive through Acadia National Park around October provides a spectacular show to mark the changing of the seasons.
