What to do

  • Mendenhall Glacier - The city's most popular attraction is this half-mile-wide, 13-mile-long river of ice that flows into Mendenhall Lake. It can be viewed from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. 
  • Climb Mount Juneau or Mount Roberts - For the most impressive views of the city and Gastineau Channel, trek three miles up Mount Juneau or a mile or so more to Mount Roberts. Mount Roberts can also be reached in five minutes via the Mount Roberts Tramway. 
  • Alaska State Museum - This state-of-the-art museum boasts artifacts and exhibits regarding Alaska's people, history and art.

When to Go

The best time to visit Juneau is between May and August when the weather is the most pleasant, but you'll have to contend with the cruise crowd. For snow enthusiasts, Juneau in winter is a wonderland, with ample opportunity for skiing and snowboarding.
